What Are RWA Swaps? The Trading Option Launched by Ripple Prime

Ripple Prime launches RWA swaps for trading tokenized real-world assets

Ripple Prime announced in a press release on October 15, 2026, that RWA perpetual swaps are now available to their institutional customers with over 100 reference markets for equity, index, ETFs, metals, energy, and FX. The contracts will be listed via Trade.xyz on the Hyperliquid platform, while Ripple Prime will serve as the principal.

What are RWA swaps?

RWA swaps are derivatives that provide exposure to markets linked to real-world assets. Ripple Prime’s offering uses perpetual futures contracts listed by Trade.xyz on Hyperliquid. These contracts have no fixed expiration date and track the prices of their respective reference markets.

Trading an RWA perpetual swap does not necessarily mean owning the underlying asset. Unlike when purchasing a tokenized security, here the trader has access to the tokenized security through a derivatives trade and not through possession of the security.

The other notable aspect is the fact that Ripple Prime acts as the principal, and this means that the clients have access to the broker and not Hyperliquid itself. It is not necessary for them to have accounts on the venue.

Ripple describes this structure as a single-counterparty relationship with centralized risk management. One settlement flow and reconciliation process cover the position, reducing the need to coordinate separate processes across trading venues.

Cross-Margining and RLUSD Collateral

Cross-margining allows eligible RWA swap positions to be margined alongside other asset classes clients trade through Ripple Prime. The brokerage services offered by the company include digital assets, FX, derivatives which are both listed and OTC, fixed income, equity and precious metals.

Under this arrangement, eligible positions across supported markets contribute to the overall margin calculation. A hedged position may lead to a reduction in collateral needs for the portfolio as a whole. Nevertheless, it depends upon the positions themselves and the margining policy. The cross-margining does not prevent losses from trading operations.

Clients can also use Ripple USD (RLUSD), Ripple’s dollar-pegged stablecoin, as collateral for RWA swaps. Ripple notes that availability varies by jurisdiction.

The offering currently operates under Ripple Prime’s CIV BVI license. Ripple said it plans to expand access to additional regions, but the announcement did not specify a timetable for that expansion.

Virtu Joins the Institutional Offering

Ripple named Virtu as an early institutional client. Scotte Moegling, Virtu’s head of business development for digital assets, said in Ripple’s announcement that continuous cross-margining across asset classes helps the firm expand its activities more efficiently.

Ripple Prime international CEO Michael Higgins said institutions want exposure to equities, commodities, and currencies. Ripple also experienced an increase in its RWA-related perpetual futures trading volume, but it did not share any data supporting the claim.

The offering is aimed at institutions rather than being positioned as a mass-market trading facility. It enables institutions to gain access to derivatives from traditional markets without handling an interaction with the underlying market directly.

Ripple Prime Expands Its Derivatives Services

The October launch follows several developments in Ripple Prime’s institutional services. In February 2026, Ripple announced the launch of its Hyperliquid, which allows clients to cross margin between decentralized finance derivatives and more traditional assets.

In May, Ripple Prime connected with EDX Markets to enhance the availability of spot liquidity and perpetual futures. Additionally, in August, it launched Delta One, a business offering total return swaps linked to U.S.-listed equities, indexes and digital assets.

Delta One and RWA perpetual swaps are distinct products. Total return swaps transfer the economic return of a reference asset according to contractual terms, while the new RWA swaps reference perpetual futures contracts.

Ripple says its prime brokerage business focuses on clearing and financing rather than operating a market-making or proprietary trading desk alongside clients. The company reported more than $1 billion in regulatory net capital and a $275 million senior notes placement that closed in August.

Risks and Limitations of RWA Swaps

RWA perpetual swaps carry derivatives-related risks. The use of leverage will increase the magnitude of loss incurred, and price fluctuations may lead to a margin call and ultimately liquidation. Continuous trading cannot ensure adequate liquidity and pricing as there will be no other markets to compare.

Jurisdictional constraints and collateral rules will also have an impact on trading. Institutional clients must consider the relevant contract terms and risks before entering positions.

The Ripple Prime solution involves providing institutional brokerage services together with perpetual derivatives associated with conventional markets. It is important to recognize that the contracts offer market exposure but not necessarily ownership of assets.
