KEY INSIGHTS
- Papertrade recorded $14.4 billion in trading volume within ten minutes as Bitcoin open interest reached $3 billion.
- Papertrade uses a zero-balance house pool and relies on realized trader losses to fund winning trade payouts.
- Papertrade launched PAPER without a premine and restricts transfers while allowing eligible users to stake tokens for rewards.
Papertrade managed to generate trading volume worth $14.4 billion in notional value in less than 10 minutes after launching their synthetic perpetual futures exchange on HyperEVM on October 10, 2026. The open interest of Bitcoin reported by the platform was valued at $3 billion, while that of Ether was valued at $2.66 billion.
The launch generated some curiosity around the settlement process of the protocol, which is unique from the traditional order book model seen in an exchange. Users are allowed to create leveraged positions against a liquidity pool owned by the protocol and funded with zero dollars. The pool is designed to receive funds from realized trading losses and use available liquidity to pay profitable positions.
The exchange also offers leverage of up to 1,000x and uses the midpoint between Hyperliquid’s best bid and offer to price positions. However, the reported trading volume and open interest measure leveraged exposure rather than the amount of money deposited or immediately available to settle profits.
Papertrade’s Launch Activity Exceeds $14 Billion in Notional Volume
Papertrade began trading at 10 a.m. October 10, during a planned HyperEVM network upgrade at Eastern Time. The total notional of $14.4 billion had been recorded in under 10 minutes after trading began.

Positions included Bitcoin and Ether. Bitcoin open interest reached $3 billion, compared with $2.66 billion for Ether. Open interest represents the value of positions that remain open, while trading volume counts transactions during a specified period, including positions opened and closed shortly afterward.
These figures do not represent equivalent amounts of deposited cash. A leverage capacity of 1,000x for Papertrade means traders have the ability to trade positions that are considerably larger than the margin they have posted. In this case, the 1,000x leverage means that each $1 in the margin represents $1,000 before other conditions for trading are considered.
The exchange received considerable deposits prior to its launch, but the reports provided show different amounts. An earlier estimation put the deposits at about $85.3 million, while a later report showed that 11,465 addresses had made $138 million in deposits prior to the end of the pre-deposit phase.
How Papertrade’s Liquidity Pool Handles Winning Trades
Papertrade does not match each trader with another participant through a traditional order book. Instead, users trade against the protocol’s liquidity pool, with contract pricing based on Hyperliquid’s best bid and offer midpoint.
According to the project’s documentation, the model removes funding payments and applies an asymmetric impact adjustment to profitable positions. Winning trades therefore face a reduction in gains, while losing trades incur their realized losses without an additional charge under the described mechanism.
The more significant distinction concerns how the protocol funds payouts. Papertrade’s house pool begins empty and accumulates capital from traders’ realized losses. The total deposits consist of customer deposits and house side liquidity. This means that all funds cannot necessarily be used to settle winning trades.
When the pool lacks sufficient funds to cover a profitable trade, the unpaid profit becomes a queued debt claim. Subsequent traders’ losses fund those claims as money enters the pool.
Papertrade builder @izebel_eth has said that traders recover their original collateral when positions close, while only their profits enter the payout queue. This separates the return of posted collateral from the settlement of gains and makes the availability of pool capital important to the payout process.
PAPER Token Supply Depends on Realized Trading Losses
Papertrade’s native PAPER token follows a distribution model tied to trading outcomes. According to the project’s documentation, the token starts with zero supply and has no premine, team allocation or venture capital allocation. New tokens are minted from eligible realized losses.
The initial issuance rate is 100 PAPER for every $1 of eligible loss basis while tracked pool capital remains below $2 million. The rate then declines according to the protocol’s emissions curve.
PAPER initially cannot move freely between wallets. Its launch functionality is restricted to staking and unstaking, making staking the token’s primary initial use.
Stakers are eligible for a 1% share of realized profit and loss from qualifying settled trades when the payout queue is empty and the pool can cover the distribution. The documentation also allows additional pool gains above a $5 million reward cap to be distributed to stakers.
The terms set the requirements for the rewards being linked to performance of trading and liquidity of the pool. The existence of a token reward mechanism does not mean every profitable trade will receive immediate settlement.
